I wish I could only read one book at a time. I generally have two books going at once, light and horumous and the other more intense. I read whatever matches my mood. I hope that made sense!

Yea no problemo. The main way you can do it is If you drop a link to this article in your article then WordPress will identify it and send a track back. That way it’s similar to the reblog option and helps readers to follow any conversations across blogs.

And yea, good point on P&P and Zorro, though at the time of this I was going for the whole swash buckling feel. I’ll edit the article at some point to include more Renaissance movies. 🙂

There’s no reblog option, so I’m going to use it as a springboard for a post on my own blog if that’s okay?

I just thought I’d point out that Pride and Prejudice and The Legend of Zorro are NOT set in the Renaissance.

Haha, I’m such a Disney geek at heart =P

When it comes to films I think you always have to take their historical accuracy with a pinch of salt. I like to watch films as a catalyst to help my brain get in the mood/setting I want to recreate, from there I can go into deeper research.
And looking back over my choice of Renaissance films I’m not sure they are all that strong. Pride and Prejudice should be under period for one.

Greek Myth meets the British Empire… you have me drooling! The 12 trials of Hercules gets black powder, fine suits and wigs. Jason and the Argonauts mixed with Sharpe… Colin I think you NEED to make this world good sir 😉

So do you have a favourite period in history?

If I were actually writing a political-romance set in 16th century Venice, I might be underwhelmed by most films set in the period. On the other hand, if I’m constructing a new world with a Renaissance flavor, I’d add Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast to the Disney-sourced material. Especially that last if I’m wanting to jump on the Steampunk wagon. A future-history flavored by Greek mythology with events largely lifted from the Napoleonic Wars and British India would be pretty suh-huh-weet!

Oh yeah, if you’re building future-, alternate- or constructed-histories, always try to steal from at the very, very least two historical sources. Being a science-fiction guy, I like to add some sort of a twist based on science, technology or alien nature/psychology. History repeats, but seldom in the same place.
